Is entrepreneurship a choice?

After spending focused time with entrepreneurs, I'm beginning to think that entrepreneurship is not a choice. Now, before you freak out on me and argue why I'm wrong, hear me out.

It seems to me that entrepreneurs have something in them (hardwired, maybe?) that yearns for freedom, seeks opportunities to create, and thrives on being owned by oneself rather than a corporation. I know that may not be universally true, but it does seem that the entrepreneurs that I've known, they all seem to want to set their own direction and not be "handled" by someone else.

It is likely that these characteristics manifested themselves in a variety of ways in the entrepreneur's formative years. Maybe school grades weren't stellar because the entrepreneur didn't want to fit into the mold of traditional education. Or, perhaps the entrepreneur was considered a bit strange by friends because they could never hold down a normal job in corporate America. Still, too, the entrepreneur may have tinkered a bit too much as a youngster and was, thus, labeled as a "nerd".

It would be interesting to ask these entrepreneurs about their formative years. Were they considered a bit strange? Did they excel in the classroom? Would they often play alone? Hmmm....I'll have to think a bit more on this. Posted by Picasa photo cc: MaxPower (flickr)

This is what I was trying to explain the other day to you. I love this and totally agree with it. This is how I've felt for a very long time.
